Serbian in UK Schools

Until 1992 Serbian was one of the languages that students could chose as an optional foreign language for their A level examinations.
However, the break up of the former Yugoslavia, changes to the national curriculum in Britain and a decline in the number of students led to Serbian being dropped.

The Serbian Council of Great Britain together with the Serbian Orthodox Church is launching an initiative to have Serbian re-entered onto the list of optional foreign languages for GCSE and A level exams.

This is in recognition of the importance that language plays in the preservation of cultural identity.

In order for the initiative to be successful we need to show the policy makers in the Examination Bodies like EDEXCEL or OCR that there are sufficient numbers of students who would be interested in signing up for Serbian GCSE and A level courses.

The first step in our campaign is to establish the number of potential students.
Please fill in the enclosed questionnaire and send it to us.

Your suggestions and help in this initiative are invaluable. For information on this initiative, and any comments, write to us on info@serbiancouncil.org.uk.
