Monday 5 September - Saturday 17 September

IONIST ART- an exhibition of highly original paintings and sculptures
at the Paul McPherson Gallery, 77 Lassell Street, Greenwich, London SE10 9PJ
Private View: Monday 5th September between 6pm - 9pm (all welcome)
Gallery opening times:
Monday 12noon - 5pm; Tuesday- Friday 11am - 5pm and
Saturday 10am - 2.30pm (closed Sunday)
The exhibition presents the extraordinary and stimulating work of five artists Gerald Shepherd, Joan Jago, Jill Rock, George Perendia and Owen Legg who initially met through the London based Free Painters & Sculptors. All these artists have multidisciplinary interests and in their own very individual way have greatly extended the boundaries of art.
The term Ionism was coined in the middle Seventies by the artist and writer Gerald Shepherd to cover the work he was producing at the time which lay somewhere in between art and science. In the Eighties he founded the Ionist Art Group to bring together artists and scientists to exchange ideas and collaborate on joint projects. The present show is an informal extension of this group.
GERALD SHEPHERD has developed his own idiosyncratic way of creating art work which combines visual art (of all kinds) with ideas from the sciences, mathematics, music and theatre. The work is often sequential and system based with a strong narrative element.
JOAN JAGO is a paper maker whose semi-abstract and abstract works reflect a life-long interest in music, mythology and archaeology. She enjoys the ambiguity of handmade paper, which allows exploration into the contrasts between fragility and durability, transience and permanence.
JILL ROCK creates art works from found objects and has collaborated with practitioners from a wide range of other disciplines, producing work both inside and outside of a conventional gallery context. Many of the objects on view have been found locally beside the Thames.
GEORGE PERENDIA is a painter and sculptor; the latter in particular has been inspired by science and technology as well the archaeology and arts of ancient Mediterranean and Mexican cultures - including medieval memorial road side steles. (see www.perendia.co.uk)
OWEN LEGG, a qualified doctor, is also a painter, printmaker, book maker and sculptor. The prints utilise traditional techniques but the sculptures take the form of witty thought provoking constructions made from an extremely wide range of materials.

Cast: Ljiljana Lasic, Rada Djuricin and Ivan Bosiljcic
POSK, 238-246 King Street London W6 0RF

For Better or for Worse?- Civil Society and Transitions in the Western Balkans - Room 405, 4th Floor, Lionel Robins Building, LSE
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, scholars 'rediscovered' civil society and identified grass-roots activism as a key driver of democratisation of illiberal regimes, reconciliation of divided societies and state-building after the war. Twenty years on, there is a growing recognition of the limits of civil society and even of its negative impact in these processes. Ultimately, the role of civil society cannot be a priori assumed as either beneficial or detrimental to political and social change. Instead, it has to be analysed in view of the complexity of transitional processes and their goals. The conference explores these questions as they relate to Western Balkans.
If you wish to attend please register in advance by sending an email to the LSEE Administrator’s Office: EuroInst.LSEE@lse.ac.uk
Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis!

What moves movies?
Room 433 (fourth floor), 16 Taviton Street
SSEES Leverhulme artist in residence Rastko Novakovic will be exploring what makes his moving image practice move, how he does it and why. Rastko will take you on a journey from the River Ravensbourne in Deptford to the river Sava in Vukovar, through Balkan Lebensraum with a capital 'L' to lowercase lebensraum in the streets of Kentish Town and via NATO's post Cold-War strategy as it is presented in Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. The journey will detour via the streets of Copenhagen, at last December's global protests against COP15 and will end in the streets of Bloomsbury with an invitation to get involved in the projects he is developing at SSEES.

Featuring the premiere of Kentish town lebensraum (2010) and extracts from: Between Clock and Bed (2007), to NATO with love (2008), Deptford | Tributes (with Amanda Egbe, 2009), Women in Black - Vukovar 2009 (with Women in Black, 2010) and some previously unseen material.
